looking california/ feeling minnesota

I went to Teaching and Learning in Two New Smart Classrooms: Research Findings on the Pedagogical Implications of Space Design first off. I saw the Crit chap from Georgia Tech who inspired much of the Adsetts extension poke his head in and was just setting off to pay homage when the session started. So I missed him, in fact he may even have been a phantom.

The speakers started off by attempting to transform the room into an innovative learning space, with quite a complicated activity. About 20 Koreans were all in a group up front receiving simultaneous translation and I was about as confused as they were. Overall the session confirmed that we are doing what we need to do with our evaluation of the Adsetts extension - any news about uptake gratefully received btw, but it was however you looked it based on old pedagogy - OK the teacher isnt at the front of the room, but they were still there. Our space is, I feel, an entirely different thing.

now, you see, the fact that this session started off badly should teach everyone one lesson: no good will ever come from using the
phrase "innovative learning space".

innovative space design? yes. innovative use of space? why, yes. but an innovative learning space? that just makes no sense. no sense at all.

... and very apt that the word verification for this post was 'no bed' as we all think those red couches in the Adsetts extension have bed written all over them!

All I can say from reading all the main posts from the people who are actually at the conference is that we seem to be light years ahead on many fronts. Just loved how blown away everyone was with the Exec training poster.

We're really missing the regular updates and assuming that the access is still flakey. Very cold and icy in the UK the last 2 days (snowed in Penistone) and in the LTI (no - it didn't actually snow in in the LTI it was just very cold) as it was down to 13 degrees earlier this week and poor Brian was sat at his desk with a winter coat, woolly hat and headphones and a very cold foot, but Susannah is on the case. Please bring back some Florida sunshine as well as the seminal prizes - can't wait!
